Our Team

Our most important and valued resource is, our people.

Our experience and dedication to doing the best that we can for a client has resulted in a loyal client base. While our lawyers have experience in different areas of law, these areas often complement each other and enable the practice to work as a team.

Daniel Shortland – BA,LLB, MComLaw (Hons), Dip Mgt, NZLS Legal Executive – Consultant

Dan is a consultant whom the firm engages to deal with civil and estate litigation and employment matters from time to time. He is a barrister sole with many years of experience especially in criminal law. As a consultant, he does not work from our offices on a full time basis but will attend our offices to deal with civil and estate litigation files and some employment disputes.

Kathryn Austin – legal executive

Kathryn has come out of retirement on a temporary basis to assist us with conveyancing and other files generally handled by legal executives and, to pass some of her vast knowledge on to Carmelite and, in time, to Melissa. She agreed to join or to re-join the team when our long time senior legal executive, Julie Kane retired. Kathryn has worked for many years as a legal executive and appears to enjoy being back in the work force on a part time basis.

Carmelite Muller – BA,LLB

Carmelite joined our team in August 2022. She is working closely with Kathryn Austin in the area of residential property transactions. While new to the role, she is slowly finding her feet and is looking forward to filling some very big shoes left behind when Julie Kane, our long time senior legal executive, retired.

Melissa Paet

Melissa joins our team as our receptionist although she will also take on the role of secretary as she works her way through life in a small law firm. Melissa certainly has an interesting background and speaks Spanish and Tagalog so you are welcome to greet her with friendly “Hola’, ‘Kamusta’, ‘Kia Ora’ or a simple ‘Hi’.
